OUR VISION

Sergio’s Feral Friends, Inc. envisions, and is working towards a time when cats no longer roam streets in need of care, food and housing, when kittens are no longer born outside into a life of neglect, fear, illness, starvation and early death, and a time when rescue organizations and cat shelters have room and available resources to help every human and cat in need.

Our Story

Sergio’s Feral Friend’s, Inc. has been a dream for about 15 years in the making. About 17 years ago, I was driving down an inner-city street late at night when I saw a bunch of cats eating garbage in the middle of the road.

I started feeding them, humanely trapping and rescuing them and getting the friendly cats into local rescue organizations to be adopted into homes.  Back then, I didn’t have the resources to give cats the proper time to decompress and assess their temperaments—for cats that seemed feral, I had to release them back to places that I still maintain feeding to this day. It broke my heart having to put them back out to places where people destroyed shelters and feeding stations, but there was no other option at the time. I had to be creative and change my approach and timing of feeding to keep the animals as safe as I could while they ate. I wished there was a safe place for them to land, especially the truly unsocialized feral cats.  Fast forward to 2019,  an incredible friend loaned one of her properties to me to house cats and assess them. With this incredible space and opportunity, I have been able to help triple the amount of animals. I still partner with local rescues who take the friendly cats for me and find them wonderful homes. The truly feral cats go back to where they are from if it’s a spot that I maintain with shelters and feeding stations. Over the years, I have had to assist several locations or cats that could not be released back to where they were from due to various circumstances (people moving, coyotes, etc.) The cats that could not be placed with rescues have remained with me as my fosters. Sergio's Sanctuary is for them—this will be their forever home. —Stacy Attenberg, Founder

Sergio's Story,

by Stacy

Sergio was a rescue from one of my feral/stray cat colonies. He showed up as a very feral kitten and was humanely trapped, neutered, vaccinated, and returned to the outdoors where he lived. He was around 5–6 years old.

Our sanctuary is not open to the public, but houses 30+ cats to retire safely from life on the streets.

OUR WORK

Over the last two decades, we have saved hundreds of lives, sterilized countless community cats, and have interacted with thousands of people through humane cat care. The ultimate goal of our work is to save as many lives as possible and bridge the gap between communities and cats.
